I think this has to do with the interdependency of nonlinear dynamical systems. Over longer timescales, every one of our actions matters. Every person matters.

We need to get away from thinking in terms of “important people” and “unimportant people.” This is an unfortunate cultural consequence of our era of FAANG monopolies, a shrinking Pareto Index, and a focus on personality instead of character.

…he direction of moral imagination to help people literally imagine the answers to these questions. (The answers, by the way, are: they might cure that cancer you’ll get, such families make for a happier, healthier, gentler society, and because it’s the right and fair thing to do.)
